The Ultimate Island Edit: My Top Beach Getaway Recommendations

People always ask me for island recommendations, like where to stay, what to pack, what to avoid, and where to eat (because priorities). So I figured it was time to share my favorite island trips, the good, the bad, and the “wow, I didn’t expect that” moments.

For this one, I’m skipping cruises and Disney (that’s a whole other blog, trust me, I’ve got thoughts).

Let’s dive into some island vacations I’ve loved, and the ones I’d absolutely go back to in a heartbeat.

Top Beach: Turks & Caicos

Turks & Caicos might just have the prettiest water I’ve ever seen. I’m talking that clear, light-blue, jelly-like shimmer that no photo ever does justice.

I went with my twin sister and stayed at Club Med. At first, we hated our room, it was way too far from everything, but shoutout to our travel agent, Lisa Mallett, who came to the rescue and switched us to a preferred room with an ocean view and balcony. Total game changer.

Here’s the scoop:

  • The staff? Let’s just say, very… energetic. If you’re not into spontaneous poolside dance lessons or late-night entertainment with glitter and high 5s, this might not be your vibe.

  • The food? Three words: white chocolate bread. I’m not kidding, we ate so much of it. I couldn't stop. I loved it!

  • The beach? Absolute perfection. Powdery white sand, no obstructions, just miles of ocean. The waves were massive while we were there, so we only swam once, but honestly, I could’ve stared at that view all day.

Would I go back? 100%. But maybe I'd try a new resort.

Top Family Experience: Atlantis, Bahamas

If you want a trip your kids will still talk about years later, Atlantis is it.

We went with friends who’d been before (which helps, they know all the tricks). We visited in June, and yes, it was hot. Bring light long-sleeve shirts for midday when there’s not much shade.

Now, the highlights:

  • The lazy river : 45 minutes of pure joy with waves, rapids, and nonstop laughs. We did it every single day.

  • Shake Shack by the pool. No explanation needed.

  • It’s not all-inclusive, but there are tons of food options and it’s worth every penny.

  • The wildlife is unreal: my kids saw fish, eels, hermit crabs, conch, halibut, stingrays, and even wild sea turtles right in the lagoons!

  • Aquariums, slides, pools, you name it. Family-friendly heaven.

Pro tip: bring your own snacks and stop at a grocery store on the way in. Grab water too, the refill taps are… let’s say, “questionable.” I filled my bottle and added ice from the soda machine (free and cold).

At night, we’d wander the marina, check out the yachts, grab ice cream, or hit Starbucks.

We stayed in the Royal Tower, which was perfect.

I’d go back in a heartbeat (in fact, I am going back again this year!) If you’re a family that likes to do things (not just sit still all day), Atlantis is your spot.

Best Romantic Getaway: Sandals, Bahamas

This one’s for the couples. My husband and I have been to Sandals Bahamas twice, and it’s the perfect size resort for a short, romantic escape.

ree
  • First trip: the ocean was incredible.

  • Second trip: the tide was high and the beach was shorter, but still beautiful.

  • We took a boat to a quiet private island, pure bliss.

  • The crepe and taco trucks were favorites.

  • Every restaurant we tried was delicious.

  • At night, it’s dress-up time, bring your best dresses or something a little bougie.

It’s romantic, quiet, and ideal for 3 nights (maybe 4 if you’re in full chill mode).

If you get antsy, Baha Mar is just a 5-minute taxi ride away, casino, restaurants, shopping, Starbucks… basically a mini Vegas.

We tried pickleball and shuffleboard, but honestly, my husband’s favorite activity was the air-conditioned pool room. (No judgment.)

The gym overlooks the ocean, such a good morning view, and a trip downtown to see the Queen’s Staircase and local distillery was a fun, safe outing.

If you're wondering, yes, I'd go back.

Best Family Resort Vibes: Punta Cana, Dreams Macao Beach

We went here with Grandpa and Grandpa’s girlfriend (yes, you read that right), and it was perfect for everyone.

ree
  • Super family-friendly: kid pool, lazy river, taco truck.

  • The beach is stunning, with cliffs that look like something out of The Little Mermaid.

  • The resort is big: one of the largest I’ve stayed at, and it’s spotless, modern, and beautiful.

  • Tons of pools, a relaxed atmosphere, and the best espresso, according to my husband.

  • You’ll walk a lot, so leave the heels at home.

If you want a clean, comfy, easygoing place with gorgeous views and family-friendly fun, this is a solid pick.

I'd go back!

If you’re craving sand, clear blue water, and a mix of chill and adventure, any of these islands will deliver.

  • Turks for jaw-dropping beaches.

  • Atlantis for all-day family fun.

  • Sandals for a romantic reset.

  • Punta Cana for relaxed family vibes.

Whether you’re going with your sister, your kids, or your husband, just remember: pack light, pack snacks, and always, always find the white chocolate bread.
